Housebreaking Information
Housebreaking should begin as soon as your puppy bring your new puppy into your home. How long the training will last depends on
both the English Bullodg puppy and you. Some pups will learn sooner than others, so please have patience. Your puppy wants to
please you. But remember a puppy's memory is short, your patience is the key.
The puppy's bed may be a box, open at one end and slightly larger than the puppy or the crate you received you English Puppy. If the
bed is too large, the puppy may defecate or urinate in a corner rather than go outside. If the bed is smaller, the puppy will do its
"business" outside rather than soil its bed. I believe this is a mistake that many new owners make.
SOME SUGGESTIONS:
Enclose the bed in a small area, such as a laundry room or bathroom. Cover this area with newspapers to be used at night, or when
your pup is left unsupervised. Do not place a puppy pad inside the crate. Puppy pads have a plastic backing, this could cause the
puppy to choke.
The secret to housebreaking is patience, and repeated trips to the outside potty area.
The first thing in the morning, the puppy should be took outside. This is so he can learn his way to the door and the reason. Let him
sniff about. The moment he has relieved himself, pat him on the head and immediately bring him into the house. Do not let him play
about. The toilet period and play period should be definitely separate in the puppy's routine.
The puppy should then be fed. In a short while the puppy will become uneasy and walk in circles sniffing at the floor. The puppy should
then be scooted and coaxed to the door as quickly as possible.
This routine should be repeated every hour or two throughout the day, especially after meals and naps. Don't leave food inside the
crate if you are not there. This will help the puppy from having accidents.
When the puppy is taken out to play, it is wise to leave the house by another door if possible. Never play with your pup until after he
has been taken out and has eliminated. When the puppy has been brought back inside from using the potty and been praised you may
take them back outside to play.
There will of course be some "accidents" in the house. Never let one "accident" go by unnoticed; punishment five minutes after the
offense is too late due to the puppy has forgotten. Scold (not whip) the puppy and rush him or her outside. Then scrub the area of
mishap thoroughly until all odor is gone. Sprinkle the area with red pepper or vinegar. I use baking soda to soak up the urine from the
carpet, by letting it sit until dry.
Positive reinforcement is just as important as properly applied discipline. When your puppy urinates or defecates in the correct place,
spend several minutes loving and praising him or her.
PUPPIES HAVE "ACCIDENTS" PLEASE BE PATIENT
